Babies Situation:

Today started off as a good day. Trinity was still on the nasal cannula when I called this morning but she did have a few spells of A’s and B’s throughout the night. As the day went on, she had more A’s and B’s so she was put back on the CPAP by 3 PM. She needed more pressure and the nasal cannula wasn’t giving her the extra support she needed. The doctor also decided to increase her caffeine to twice a day rather than once a day hoping it would help with the apnea. They did put her on a different CPAP from before. The CPAP machine she has been on had long prongs that reached to the back of her nose. The Arabella CPAP has short prongs which is hopefully less irritation to her little nose. She’ll also get some blood work done to check for infection. She has had an intolerable amount of A’s and B’s today and it’s not worth chancing. Dr. Untalan will be putting her on antibiotics just in case. Kinsley’s day has been better than Trinity’s. The only change is that she is now getting the maximum amount of fortifier she can get. She’s pretty much been quiet all day minding her own business.

The girls have had so many different Respiratory Therapists helping them over the past weeks. All of them are always checking on them and chatting with Mom and Dad. In addition to all of our Doctors and Nurses, it is so nice to have them all their caring for our girls. Abby, Courtney, Richard, Andy, and Tara (Kinsley's Nurse Practitioner who has been asked to help other little ones in the NICU now) plus many many more who have all been involved in the process. We just want to thank all them for such tender care of the girls. It is truly amazing what they do and is a tremendous team effort in the NICU from our Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Nurse Practitioners, and on and on.

Parent's Thoughts:

Wow, today has been somewhat of an uneasy day for us. As the day progressed, Trinity’s apnec spells did not get any better. Even when I held her today, she had a handful of A’s and B’s on me which is terrifying. When she has a spell on you, it feels like there is less control since it would be harder for the nurse to get to her. It can be pretty stressful. Earlier today, they told me the apnea could be from her not being ready for the nasal cannula, her bolus feedings putting her into a deep sleep, or from acid reflux. As Trinity continued to have A’s and B’s, the doctor decided to check her caffeine level and to do a CBC to check her red and white blood cells. Well, I just got the dreaded phone call from Dr. Untalan tonight that she’s having way too many spells. He has decided to start her on antibiotics tonight and will be doing a blood culture to check for infections. We pray that she doesn’t have an infection. This could be a huge step back.

Our Daily Encouragement:

But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

Psalm 59:16
